Soil composition and quality
Here’s a detailed look at the composition and quality of the soil at the stud farm, located in the heart of the Pays d’Auge.
Regional geological context
- Chalk and clay substratum: the Pays d’Auge is underlain by Upper Cretaceous formations (flinty marly chalk) covered by a mantle of alterites containing flinty clays and loessic silts.
- Clayey Jurassic hills in the foreland areas, covering the surrounding valleys.
Typical soils around the stud farm
- Loessic silts dominant on the plateaus, several meters thick: poorly leached soils, sometimes slightly podzolic. These silty layers rest on flint clay, a source of moderate natural drainage.
- These soils are therefore clay-loam, with a texture that is both retentive (thanks to the clay) and draining (thanks to the silt and flint).
Types properties and agricultural use
- Clay-limestone soil (locally called terrefort): a deep, calcium-rich clay/plaster mixture with good water retention and a texture ideal for livestock farming.
In meadows and wooded areas:
- Brunisols (brown soils) predominate under forest cover (~47%)
- Hydromorphic soils (~29%) in wetter areas
- Podzols and calcosols also present on limestone slopes or outcrops
